164E - What is that crawling over my plants?

 As a child I was fascinated by the loud cicadas in Spain and also by the much smaller crickets in our own polder garden. Sometimes you could find dangerous looking grasshoppers with wicked sabres to their backsides in the hedge next to the school. That fascination stayed with me. So I'm forever alert to the insects in Hunky Dory.

Chrysolina coerulans

   The blue mint beetle (fam. Chrysomelidae) is a leaf beetle, with a smooth round body and long antennae in the same colour. It glows like a jewel in the sun.

  In Hunky Dory it likes to live on my Monardas, to eat the pollen and nibble on leaves. There are a lot of horror stories on the internet about this beetle, who adores mint so much it can strip entire fields, apparently. Because of my refusal to spray with poison, I catch them when there are too many, but so far they are not a problem.

   I have written before (briefly) about this firebug, but here is some more info: a firebug will eat leaves, sure, but also aphids! In fact they will eat dead insects, so they are useful crawlies in spite of their colours which warn of danger. They don't bite or sting and are not poisonous. In my garden it likes the Centaurea, but I meet it everywhere else as well.

The Asian Cocinella

   Although I have many more European ladybirds, I also see the Asian kind. In my garden the European cocinellas like to overwinter in between the leaves of the Artichokes, and they will fly to the Rhubarb leaves as soon as they appear. The Asian kind has more spots and can also be red or yellow. This kind is poisonous and invasive. I see them everywhere, the one in the photo was on my Desdemona rose.

   Ladybirds in general are poisonous and have a bite you can also really feel as a human. They are known for getting rid of your aphids (yay), but they do also eat other insect's larvae, leaf beetles, spider mites, and aren't shy of a caterpillar. I welcome them, as long as they don't crawl into my bra again.

Not a Red Admiral

Last Summer the butterfly I saw most frequently was the Vanessa Atalanta. The one on the photo is the Peacock, sorry. Let's try again.

   This butterfly can live up to a couple of years and enjoys my Buddleias, Thistles, Echinaecias, Knautias and here it is sitting on a Scabiosa.

   Having said that, last Summer saw very few butterflies. And this Spring so far has been far too wet and windy for butterflies, the poor things.

Deilephila elphenor

This moth I only spotted once, unfortunately, in August 2023. And I did not manage to take a good frontal photo. But take my word for it, it is gorgeous, with a wingspan of 7cm. The common name is Elephant Hawk Moth. It had a preference for my Valerian, which I have masses of, so I hope to see it this Summer as well! And take a proper photo.

Obviously I share Hunky Dory with many other insects, especially bumblebees, hoverflies and all kinds of leaf beetles, but I will save that story for another time. And perhaps I'll write a blogpost about everything I meet in my heavy clay these days.

164 - Wat zit daar op mijn planten?

 Als kind was ik gefascineerd door de luidruchtige krekels in Spanje en ook door de veel kleinere soort in onze eigen poldertuin. In de heg langs het schoolplein kon je soms gevaarlijk uitziende sprinkhanen vinden met zwaarden aan hun achterlijf. Die fascinatie is blijven hangen. Dus ik ben altijd gespitst op insecten in Hunky Dory.

Chrysolina coerulans

   Het blauwe muntgoudhaantje (familie Chrysomelidae) is een bladkever, met een glad rond lijf en met lange antennes in dezelfde kleur.

  In Hunky Dory woont hij graag op mijn Monardas, waarvan hij het stuifmeel en de bladeren eet. Het is net een juweel dat glanst in de zon. Op het internet kom je veel horrorverhalen tegen over deze kever, die blijkbaar ook gek is op munt en hele velden kaalvreet. Omdat ik geen gif gebruik, vang ik ze wanneer het er teveel worden,  maar tot nu toe valt het erg mee.

Over de vuurwants heb ik al kort geschreven, maar hier nog wat meer info: een vuurwants eet bladresten, ja, maar ook bladluizen! Ze eten ook dode insecten, het is dus in tegenstelling tot hun gevaarlijke uiterlijk een nuttig dier. Ze steken of bijten niet, zijn niet giftig. Bij mij zat hij op de Centaurea.

Cocinella op mijn balkon

   Dit is het overbekende lieveheersbeestje. Bij mij overwinteren ze massaal tussen de bladeren van de Artisjokken en verkassen naar de rabarberbladeren zodra die gaan groeien. Maar ze vliegen vrolijk door de hele tuin en wonen ook in mijn balkontuintje.

  Ook ik heb tegenwoordig de Aziatische soort, die veel meer stippen heeft, rood of geel kan zijn en invasief is. Lieveheersbeestjes zijn giftig en kunnen gemeen bijten. Ze staan bekend om het opruimen van bladluizen, maar eten ook larven van andere insecten, bladhaantjes, spintmijten en halen hun neus ook niet op voor een rupsje. Bij mij zijn ze welkom! Als ze maar niet meer in mijn beha kruipen.

Vanessa atalanta

Afgelopen zomer was dit de meest voorkomende dagvlinder in mijn tuin: de Atalanta. Deze vlinder kan wel een jaar oud worden en zit graag op mijn Buddleias, Distels, Echineacias, Knautias en zoals je ziet ook op de Scabiosa.

Dit gezegd hebbend, waren er afgelopen zomer erg weinig vlinders. En dit voorjaar zijn de weersomstandigheden tot nu toe ronduit knudde voor vlinders. Ik heb één  Citroenvlinder en twee Koolwitjes gespot en dat was het.

Deilephila elpenor

   Deze nachtvlinder heb ik helaas maar één keer gezien en het lukte me niet haar op de rug te fotograferen. Het is echt een beeldschone vlinder met een spanwijdte van 7cm. De gewone naam is Groot Avondrood. Bij mij had ze een voorkeur voor de Valeriaan waarvan ik in mei hele bossen heb, dus ik hoop het Groot Avondrood nog vaker te zien! En dan wèl een goede foto te kunnen maken.

   Uiteraard deel ik Hunky Dory met nog veel meer insecten, vooral veel hommels, zweefvliegen en allerlei bladhaantjes, maar dat verhaaltje bewaar ik voor een volgende keer. En misschien schrijf ik ook een keer een blogpost over alles wat ik tegenwoordig in mijn klei aantref.
